In a Google search, the following statement
was made about the youth of South, “The
youth of the South are no longer youthful and useful but made youthless and
useless in the rungs and ranks of their nation building” (Posted on Nov. 29th
2011 by 03.10pm). In another development, one thing that still worries me is
why the women are given 35% affirmative action, but the youth with nothing.
From our household experience, not
everything that looks new is useful and not everything that looks old is
useless. Similarly, from our new nationhood experience not everybody that looks
youthful is useful and not every body that looks youthless is useless. Hence, this call for a critical
examination of the youth, her youthfulness and usefulness. Thus, who is a youth?
A youth is simply a young person or the
period of life when one is young, say from 13 to 25 years for early youth and
from 26 to 45 years for late youth. To be youthful means, having complete and full
qualities of a young person. Simply put, to be full as a youth and useful is to
effectively use something to the full. Now, what are the true qualities of a
youth that should be put into full use?
·
Youth is a time when your brain and brawn
(strength) are agile, active and vibrant.
·
It is the time when all your nerves and
instincts are seeking the strongest task to accomplish.
·
The prime time of anyone’s life, and the
period of curiosity and inquisitiveness is the youth age.
·
Youth is that period of life when you are
endowed with vitality, bubbling with enthusiasm, fiery zeal and unquenchable
heroism. It is the period when you are full of strength, verve and elixir.
·
Youths are tabernacle of unseen marbles and
marvels.
·
Youth have creative powers and tremendous
ability that propel from the inside (CF II Tim 1:6-7).
·
Youth are the shining light of God, chosen
generation, royal priesthood and peculiar people (see, 1 Peter 2:9).
·
Youths are fearfully and wonderfully made (Ps.
139:14).
No
wonder, my name sake, William Shakespeare said;
“Youth
is nimble ….. Youth is hot and bold….Youth I adore thee”.
A
useful youth is therefore a young person who is spiritually active, mentally
sound and emotionally balance. One who is sociable, creative, meticulous, risk
bearer, problem solver, a ‘think-tank’, an innovator and a world-changer. He is
a useful youth who combines knowledge with skills for productivity; who acts
after deep thought and who translate vision into action for pension.
If you meet an accomplished old man,
prosperous and celebrated, it did not just happen somewhere in his old age. It
is a product of a series of wise decisions made and successfully executed while
in his teens and twenties. On the slip side, if you see an old woman whose life
is battered and shattered, and being pushed between one man and another, it is
not likely due to the life she lives when she has become old. She laid that
kind of foundation when she was young. Youth is the ‘yesteryears’ of old age,
what you make of it, is what it will become.
Therefore,
it is my aim in this masterpiece to fire you with an unquenchable heroism and
enthusiasm which will make you a lion ready to devour anything that will plan
to negate your move in becoming a useful youth with the sole and ultimate aim
of actualizing your dream in life. When you put in the effort, zeal, and zest and
get determined, it will unfold your innate and inner reservations, and wonders
will begin to happen. So, I urge you, Capediem!
